Pauillac

Capital of the Médoc wine region, the port town of Pauillac has given its name to an appellation with a highly homogeneous terroir. On the left bank of the Gironde, the Pauillac appellation covers some 1,200 hectares. It is renowned for producing some of the world's most complex and elegant red wines.

Château Lafite is undoubtedly one of the most famous wines of Bordeaux and, along with Latour and Mouton-Rothschild, is one of the three undisputed peaks of Pauillac.

It all began with Louis XV's Grand Ecuyer, the famous Jean-François de Pontet. In 1855, the estate was awarded the title of Grand Cru Classé. In 1975, Guy Tesseron bought Château Pontet-Canet. He invested and developed this fifth Médoc Grand Cru into one of the finest.

​

The soil is composed of gravel and sand, a difficult environment that suits the demanding Cabernet-Sauvignon grape variety. Its ability to adapt, combined with the Château's determination to let nature take its course, results in full-bodied, well-structured wines that are ideal for long ageing.

An iconic reference among the great wines of Pauillac, Château Mouton Rothschild is the youngest of Bordeaux's Cinq Premiers Crus Classés.

​

It has 90 hectares of gravel, pebbles and gravel soils, which retain the warmth provided by the sun. This aridity makes the poor soil unsuitable for cultivation, yet compatible with the requirements of an elegant, powerful vine.

Second wine, and not the least, from Château Mouton Rothschild, whose aromas bear witness to its complexity.

 

The vines are planted on gravelly soils that trap heat and release it during the night, helping to ripen the grapes. These draining soils rest on a clay-gravel subsoil, giving the estate's wines singular power, elegance and tannic structure.

Château d'Armailhac is adjacent to Château Mouton Rothschild to the north and enjoys a southern exposure, ensuring a unique, sunny flavor to its wines.

The rise of Cabernet Sauvignon in the Médoc is closely linked to Château d'Armailhac, since it was Armand D'Armailhacq, its owner at the time, who introduced and developed it (along with Baron de Brane) in the region. A link that has endured over the years, with this grape variety becoming the signature of the Château's identity and contributing to its reputation for refinement and elegance.
